Lots of Travel Agents (places we Brits book holidays to go abroad) do currency exchange, also most of the high street banks. Check if your own Bank in US has any arrangements with UK banks some do, but also get some £ Sterling while you are still in the US at favourable rates (so shop around where you live, most large Cities will be able to supply you with Sterling, before you come over) , in which case you just go into the bank and hand over your credit/debit card, but it is worth shopping around. Don't be fooled by 'no charges' they weight the exchange rate, which @ 0620 hrs 7th Dec 12 is $1.6053 and from your point of view they change daily (they actually change by the minute but minor fluctuations can be dismmissed) So yo will probably have to pay about $1.75 for £1, remember this when buying stuff as UK can be horrendously expensive for some items. Beware the Airport for changing, some are very good, others rip you off, but if you bring some money with you it stops the hassle, and the larger Hotels exchange money, again though ask what the exchange rate is, some are good others are cheats becuase they think they have a captive audience, smaller Hotels should know where to get good deals on exchange. And I hope you have a brilliant time here, not the best time of year for weather, but as UK is so unpredictable any time of the year it might be glorious sunshine, or crap drizzle and cold lol.

You can bring it to a bank or a money exchange bureau. The worth would be dependant on the current exchange rate of the currency.

You would have to do it through a bank in ethier america or england. One of the bigger national banks. you may also be able to do it through the government but it would be much harder.

Just go to your local bank. They should do the exchange for you.
