It must be remembered that the "true" summit of Mount Etna is moveable and varies from one eruption to the next. The height is of course also variable and my selection of 3333m is just a pleasing compromise between a variety of different quoted figures.

The ground had broken open for more than 270 miles along a great fault - the San Andreas rift. The country on the east side of the rift had moved southward relative to the country on the west side of the rift. The greatest displacement had been 21 feet about 30 miles northwest of San Francisco

The quake lasted only a minute but caused the worst natural disaster in the nation's history. Modern analysis estimates it registered 8.25 on the Richter scale (By comparison, the quake that hit San Francisco on October 17, 1989 registered 6.7).

Mt. Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe at 10,991 feet. Adding land mass, it is 3 times larger than Mt. Vesuvius. It's largest eruption was in March of 1669 when it ejected 830,000,000 cubed meters of lava
