it could have been the belt tensioner could have seized or one of the other pulleys (water pump, a/c compressor, or power steering pump)

Belts do wear out, so it's not a big problem. A dealer will replace it in about 15-20 minutes, and that includes the coffee break. You will of course pay the minium labor charge, plus the cost of the belt and a 200% surcharge on that.
There should be a little sticker in the engine compartment showing how the belt is installed. It's not hard to do, and the same belts that were original equipment are sold at Auto Zone and Walmart. The tensioner pulley is sometimes springloaded, so all you need is a long prybar to move it back and release the tension.

Belts break from age, one of the components seized or just normal wear and tear. Next time check your belt every oil change. Ten cracks per inch. Anymore replace the belt.

No, it's not something you did. When you replace the belts check the tensioner and the tracking of the belt.If the belt isn't tracking in the center of the pulley it will cause it to have premature wear. Make sure you have no oil leaking on the belt. Make sure you have no burrs on the pulleys.

i have never seen a belt break unless one of the pullies is frozen up. Normally a water pump or alternator when bad will stop spinning and the belt will break. Dont be suprised if teh dealership calls you and tells you that you need a new water pump, alternator or even an idler pully.

You should inspect it every oil change for signs of cracking and wear. They usually need to be replaced every 50 -60 thousand miles. Easy to replace and could save costly repairs to your engine. I hope you got lucky and didn't burn up a water pump or altenator or anything other than the belt.

What can cause a broken belt?
1. Overage/lack of attention to maintenance
2. Siezed or worn belt tensioner, tensioner pulley or idler pulley
3. Failed A/C Compressor Clutch
4. Fluid contamination (oil or coolant for example)

they just get old and worn our and break. you should replace the belts and hoses every 4 years.
Other things can make them break...such as a bad alternator or air compressor seizing up and causing the belt to slip on that pully and wearing it out prematurely.
They break..you replace them.
Good luck
