SAG - Screen Actor's Guild,m the union for those appearing in motion pictures
Actor's Equity - the union for legitimate theatre
AGVA - American Guild of Variety Artists - for musical productions, opera, profesisonal singers
AGMA - American Guild of Musical Atists - the chorus equivalent for AGVA
AFTRA - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists - self explanatory
All are performing arts unions, and your first union is your mother union. Often that means a discount when you sign on for your second and third union.
In a union production, the maximum hours you can work, the conditions under which you can work, the minimum you can get paid for different jobs, the requirements for an employer to provide meals ro housing or other benefits for overtime, for road shows, for extra performances - all are spelled out in the union agreements.
The great paradox is how to get into the union. When I was starting out (Equity is my mother union) you got an Equity card by getting an Equity contract. You got an Equity contract by appearing at an Equity audition. BUT - to get INTO the Equity audition, you had to show your Equity card at the door.
In live theatre, there is a world on non-Equity theatre, which is often a good place for a young actor to make a living and learn the craft, without getting involved in the union business. Also you have less competition.
I hope that helps

no...just in wording along to be union is different to be nonunion.
the biggest thing is that a non union member doesn't pay dues. Sure sure they save money but then they don't get the benfits of being part of a union.
SAG is an actors union or guild for Screen Acting either in television or films
Screen Actors Guild- SAG
usually an actor gets a few non union films or commercials under their belt and with that experience. Once you feel you are able to keep up, can afford it, and work well in a team mindset, you can apply to SAG. Once in you're in, pay your dues and you will be informed of certain SAG films and such coming up for audition. It's worth it in the long run, just not immediately the moment you finish your high school Drama class.

SAG (Screen Actors Guild) is a Union for Professional Actors.
Non-SAG means the actor is NOT a member of (Screen Actors Guild) SAG.
