I think EVERYBODY, gay, straight, man, woman, should read Leslie Feinberg's "Stone Butch Blues". Although it focuses on butch lesbians, it really includes the whole community and is just an amazing pseudo-memoir by the author about everything that is faced in the pre-Stonewall gay life, with touches of transgenderism, discrimination, and so on. Really, really good.

And, although it's erotic/pornographic, anybody who likes gender, sexuality, and transgression of all lines should take a look at Carol Queen's fiction book "The Leather Daddy and the Femme". It's both a statement and just really, really hot writing.

Other than that, there are lot of good books out there, it just depends what your in the mood for. Romantic? Comedy? Drama? A regular story that happens to feature gay characters? Heavy-handed messages? And if so- with happy endings? Dealing with coming out? Discrimination? Love? There's a lot out there.

Her web site is

Many of her works (with correct titles) can be seen there with reviews; also various places where they can be purchased.

I Say a Little Prayer: A Novel
By E. Lynn Harris

It's really good, you should read it. Witty, touching, a very good "cuddle up to have your spirits lifted" book.

I haven't read it yet, but my good friend has given Augusten Burroughs' "Running with Scissors" and "Dry" very high marks. Neither are specifically about gays, but they have major gay themes.
