Deepavali is the southern indian way of pronouncing it while diwali is the northern indian way of saying it.
Both exists.
However now diwali is used more as it is shorter and concise to say.
Deepavali means to through the brightness of light. It is the celebration of the triump of goodness versus evil.

Divali, Dewalli, Dipavali, Deepavali are accepted as correct spelling of the name of a 5day Hindu Festival of Lights celebrated on 15 day of Karitka month in lunar calendar. The day is not fixed in Western solar calendar and falls on different dates each year in October or November. During the holiday the lamps and candles are lit to celebrate the victory of good over evil. Worship is given to Lakshimi, goddess of wealth and good fortune and return of Rama and Sita is retold from the story in Ramayan.

depavali means the garland of light diwali to has the same meaning but in local language is called diwali but in proper hindi it is knon as deepavali.
