You sound like you are totally inexperienced. The first thing you need to do is get an instruction book at a craft store, that will show you( with pictures) how to do the basic stitches.You should then practice until you are comfortable with the use of the yarn and the hook. Then look for a simple pattern, like a scarf,and crochet away.

I tried for years to learn to crochet and never could quite get it. Then a couple of years ago my husband bought me a set from WalMart with a simple book and some hooks, that year we got snowed in on our anniversary trip and I had the kit and some yarn with me and learned to crochet.
