barbusaur is a grass pokemon and poison pokemon and it is easy to train, this is a very good choise for those who has just started to play the pokemon game.
squirter is water type, he is not very strong before he envolve into worturtle but after he invelve he will become a very good fighter, after he envolve into blastoise it is almost undefeatable.
charmander is a fire beginner and he is difficult to train, but it is very strong after each evolution, and it will become both flying and fire type after it envolve into charizard.

ROFL.... ok i'm alright... back on my chair...
i've played this game years ago... and was pretty dam pro... considering i d/l ed japanese versions and played them on the comp ie. red, green, yellow, blue } all of which are litterally the same thing, and gold, silver, crystal... gave up on crystal...
ANYWAYS!!!... choose bulbasaur or suirtle as a beginner... charmander is mainly a more experience monster... but... ya he's undoubtely cooler...
HOWEVER, to make you life easier for the first three gyms... bulbasaur is the best pick because the first gym is Rock based, the water based then lightning based...
in short... water pwns rock, uneffective against other water, and UBERweak against lightning...
so... choose bulbasaur... it'll make you life much easier...
however i'll make a note of this... u wont be able to catch any of those three outside...
Charmander pwns cuz of his last evolution owns... but it means u have to ... well... catch a leaf or water based for the first gym, a lighting or leaf based for second gym and finally a rock based for the lightning based gym...
in conclusion: Bulbasaur for beginner, Squirtle for novice that can catch pokemon strong against gym leader monsters and Charmander for... well... REALLY pro people who understand all weaknesses and strengths of the pokemon and can think of stats to counter other poke. =) hope that helps

squitle is good against the first boss, balba is good for beginners and chamander is good for getting exp for your other pokemon but is weak against the first i think 3 bosses
