Yes, (FYI) Alimony has nothing to do with children. Alimony is strictly for the support of your prior spouse.

Alimony ends at a specific time as outlined in the divorce decree (example: 3 years from 25Dec06) or when the spouse who is receiving alimony remarries.

No, usually not. She can work. In todays ages, she isn't considered "old". However, assuming that the marriage was long, (over 10 years usually) she would be awarded half of the value of the estate, should she ask. (Unless she signed a prenup, and some other aspects you did not outline, so I cannot address. Hopefully she worked sometime during her life.(40 +quarters) If not, she has 15 years to build an estate by age 65. If it is not large enough, she may need to continue to work...... if she wishes full SS benefits, by the time she is 65, the system may not allow her to retire until age 67 or 68. In divorce, so that the two opposing attorneys don't get it all, it is best to use a mediating attorney, who represents both sides. Be sure you each have decided what you each want before you go in. If you each get one, you are in an adversarial stance, and the only ones who come out ahead are the attorneys.

Well in some cases she does especially if the man is wealthy or at least has something to give towards alimony. In case she doesn't I would not quit my job and if you don't have a job, you might need to get one. Because if you don't get alimony, you might be able to get part of his retirement and social security.
