Appear means Look.Conseqently appearance means looking.Now
Appearance could be ugly like that of a pig
Appearance could also be beatific like that of god
Appearance could also be impressive like that of a leader
Appearance could also be sudden or unexpected like that of a witness to an event.
Appearance could also be attractive like that of a damsel
Appearance could also be slovenly i.e. unkempt

When I read the question I visualised your appearance. IIt was that of a bewieldered child cowed down by the appearance of appearance.Don't be disheartened. Appearance intrincically suggest disception (Disceptive appearance one more adjective) or something unreal(another adjective). You are the only one getting cowed down by 'appearance'. Many do e.g. by the sudden appearance on the scene of a self-proclaimed saviour of tthe world who,however, soon turns out to be a charltan.So never go by Appearances but what lies behind them.

That homeless man has a dirty appearence.
The appearence of that car is beautiful.
