All mammals produce the same pregnancy hormone correct? So would a human pregnancy test work on say a dog, goat, horse, etc? Give me good reasons of why or why not.
Rude or irrelavant questions will be reported.

Okay, I've already reported two people.

Numbers of reported answers are adding up, why are idiots who don't know what they are talking about on this site anyway? I'm not sick, I don't abuse animals, I was just wondering because it came up in a conversation a while back. JEEZ

It really doesn't have anything to do with genes, breed, etc. It's the hormone produced by the mother, hcg. It's present in all mammals, that's how a vet checks right? But they do blood tests instead of waiting around for an animal to pee I suppose. I don't know, that why I'm asking.
Also, my cat and dog are both "its" and are uncapable of reproducing. I was just hoping for some insightful answers.

I've got the answer, thank you. Animals were used in the process of testing for the hcg hormone, go to this website and it should explain it to you. Thanks to all were polite, ha ha to those who didn't think it possible.

i don't see why not. just by using the pee has enough hormones either human or animal levels high enough for the pregnancy test to be successful. but i would still take my pets to the vet, even better i get them neuter or spayed.
dolly, don't get pissy some people they're just trying to be funny. is good question just like you said your curious person. i would of never thought of it. cool

Pregnancy tests look for hCG, human chorionic gonadotropin. hCG is a hormone that is produced by the embryo after conception, and then by different parts of the uterus later in pregnancy. I don't believe a human test would pick up the similar hormone in dogs. I work for a vet, and we had one breeder that tried that and didn't have any luck. She may have tried too early, but I haven't heard of any one else having success with them.

From the website:
http://www.homehealth-uk.com/medical/pregnancytest.htm
"Both tests look for the presence of the hormone H.C.G. (Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin) in human urine. It is this hormone that is produced by the placenta during pregnancy, the further in to the pregnancy you are the higher the levels of H.C.G. in your urine".

This would lead me to believe that each animal has it's own specific hormone known as "Chorionic Gonadotrophin". In other words, pregnancy tests would have to be specifically made to detect the animal's own unique hormone. For example: Canine Chorionic Gonadotrophin, Feline Chorionic Gonadotrophin, Bovine Chorionic Gonadotrophin, etc.

I don't believe that a human pregnancy test would work on other animals.

Very intriguing question, thank you. I'm going to do some more research on this.

I don't think that animal and human hormones are compatible. Those tests are designed to detect "HCG" which is a Human Growth Hormone, maybe the vet has a test which is designed to detect "CGH" or canine growth hormone.

Well, theoretically, if it is the same hormone, it should, but there may be some subtle differences that keep it from being fully effective.

Besides, I don't want to try and get the horse to go on the wand.

I don't think so, because a human pregnancy test detects HUMAN growth hormone. It may work though...depending on how close in chemical make up... the growth hormone is in certain animals.

Home pregnancy tests detect amounts of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) - key word being "human".

i don't think we all do have the same hormones that's why there are different ways of doing the test

i think the tests are used for human dna nothing else thatll make it complicated unless your willing to take it to the hospital to test it out and its jsut a waste of money
