Hi zeggy. For a present for your daughter this would be good and probably a better choice than a psp. There are many fun and child friendly games for it. Some educational ones too. But as you've been told it is a touch screen. It is reasonably robust but in the hands of a 5 or 6 year old it may become damaged, especially if any little sisters get jealous and wanna have a play! It is something that should be played with and shared by you to begin with cos the complexitities of the machine may not be respected at xmas time, where everything is viewed as a "toy". If you get a chance go to a "GAME" store, like in Notts, and they always have one on show that you can play. Like i said it is a complex gaming machine and is not really a "toy" so as long as E looks after it and you take her thru the workings of it, you should be fine! Cya! xx

Yes you can for example brain age is a game for the Nintendo DS it can help boost a persons IQ by giving challenging problems. The nintendo DS has two screens one at the top and the bottom one which is a touchscreen which is great for kids and novice gamers. The Nintendo DS has the same amount of graphics as the nintendo 64. And Nintendo DS is wireless with the ability to download other peoples DS games for multiplayer action. Nintendo DS also has something called pictochat which allows you to chat and draw messages all at the same time. And if you close the screen the DS goes into a low power mode and if you flip it back up it goes right back to the thing you were doing before. Al in all the Nintendo DS is a great buy, and it is avaliable in all most every store.

The two educational games for the DS are called Brain Age and Big Brain Academy. These games are intended for people of all ages who want to give their brain a daily workout by solving puzzles and doing math, etc. These are fun and useful games, but they are not intended to teach the player how to read or do math. Other than those games, all other Nintendo DS are meant as entertainment only.

we have 2 DS's, one for step-son age 11 and one for husband age......OLDER lol, but our daughter (age 4 ) and myself play games sending words and clues and pictures back and forth to each other in 'picto-chat'. There is also the Bowser which you can but to get e-mails etc. I think they are a great learning tool if they are used in the right way. There are also lots of 'games' which have an educational edge and for the price they are at now, well worth it! If I have the money available, I would definately buy my daughter one for her own use this year.

Okay a Nintendo ds is a dual screen gaming system that costs 130.00 dollars in the U.S. It is one of the newest portable handheld gaming device made from Nintendo. The top screen is a regular screen and the bottom one is a touch screen this allows for more interactive and easier play on games.
This is a great gaming device and I would reccommend you get it for someone the only thing is I WOULD NOT give it to a barely 5 year old kid. The nintendo ds is geared for ages at least 8 and up. But it should really start with like 10 and up. the thing is that this is a very expenisve item and if you give it to a five year old she isnt going to know what to do with it and she isnt going to know how to properly take care of it so she doesnt lose it, damage the touch screen etc. Also all the games are pretty much geared for older kids that understand how to play games and i'm afriad a five year old isnt giong to know what to do and will get frustrated and not even play on it. Plus right now the ds games dont have any easy learning games or anything of that nature at the moment. And plus the ds games are very very tiny and a five year old might try to swallow it or just plain lose it very easily. I would just not reccomend getting this type of gaming system for someone so little and young. I would wait until she gets older.
But there are quite a few of other gaming systems that are cheaper and have games geared for her age group. Such as the leapster L Max. It is geared for younger ages and has tons of learning video type games that make learning fun along with a video type game play. It sounds like a great investment. It also has a touch screen I belive but i'm sure it will be more durable than a ds lite because it was made with younger kids in mind. This system is also quite a bit cheaper than the ds and it will be more fun and educational for a younger kid. This system comes in different colors and has a lot of games to choose from. I found it for you on amazon.com along with other games and accessories for it, Here is the link :
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/102-5976333-0010533?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=leapster
There is also another device that is called the V smile handheld. It is geared for the same age group as the L Max. This one doesnt have a touch screen just buttons. It has a lot of games to choose from that are learning ones also like the L max. I looked up the V smile on amazon also along with it's other games that you can buy and accessories. Here is the link:
http://www.amazon.com/V-Smile-Interactive-Learning-Handheld-Game/dp/B0007WWZIQ/ref=pd_bxgy_t_img_a/102-3637047-0074562
Both systems as I was reading about them can be hooked up to your television and they can play their games on the t.v. screen. A few reviews that I read on amazon.com said that their kids liked to hook up their systems to the t.v. so they could show their parents their accomplishments that they made on their games. The Nintendo ds doesnt do this so this is a nice thing to have on a game system. Also these game systems that i mentioned above have larger games so that the younger kids ( your neice) wont lose them so easily and they game system itself is more durable and easier to hold than the Nintendo ds. Also since you can hook them up to the t.v. it also works in the car t.v. (if the car has one) so when on long trips or in the car she can hook it up on the car t.v. screen and play that way.
So I would realllllly reccomend that you get another gaming system other than the nintendo ds because I really think she is too young to be playing on it especially since I dont think she will be able to understand the games and cant learn anything from them.
