I've always used the tubing from Christmas wrap - just wrap the lights around, if the strings are small enough, you can make certain that none of the rows of lights overlap. Tape the ends to the tube. I've even done a quick light check with the lights still on the tube (untaped just the plug end). It keeps the lights all in one place and you can just spin the tube around to do a quick check for any burned out bulbs.

I remember my father rolling the lights up like an extention cord or rope, then tying it with a twist tie, that way they are stored neatly and have a less likely chance of getting tangled, especially if you wrap a twist tie around a section of cord or even in two or three places. He would take one end in his hand and bend he arm at the elbow and wrap the cord with the lights around his elbow to his hand and between his thumb and forefinger, I have done that myself and works like a charm.
Good luck and Merry Christmas.

There's no right way to put them back in the box, Wrap the lights around newspaper. Don't fold up the newspaper, keep it in the square shape. A piece of sturdy cardboard would also work.

What we do is wrap the light strings around the cardboard tube that is from gift wrapping paper. It keeps them pretty organized.

We use the empty rolls of christmas wrapping paper and roll our lights on those. I always complain to my man about making me do that, but every year I am thankful that me made me do it.
