I am a fireman and plugins can cause fires, so avoid them. I have never found anything that really works, it what is called an air freshner. What I do is buy up ladies perfume at garage sales and sprinkle that around the house. You need the good quality stuff but it really works good.

The best things I have found are essential oils. You can simmer a few drops in an old pan (1/2 filled with water) for a few minutes.

I mix 10 drops of lavender oil into a 16 oz box of baking soda and sprinkle it on my carpets. Leave it overnight and vacuum the next day. I also sprinkle it under the couch and let it sit for the week and vacuum it up on Saturdays. My living room smells nice all week this way.

There's a lot more information and recipes on the Web.
Check them out if you have the time. It's worth it!

Use PURE CITRUS orange or grapefruit spray in a can. This is a 100% natural, non-aerosol air freshener and eliminates odors naturally. The scent is awesome and works great! Here's the list of ingredients for orange: 100% of the fragrant oils found in fresh oranges. The product, available at any WalMart, contains zero man-made chemicals, heavy perfumes or artificial ingredients. I wouldn't use any other product in my house.

OUST! It is a little more expensive. Kills smoke odor and everything. I use it in the car and house. Forget the rest of the products and try the Oust. Good luck.

nothing beats good old-fashioned baking soda. it actually absorbs odors. all those other products just overpower the bad smells and replace them with artificial, overpowering, flowery, chemically-derived "fragrances". even tho they got names like "mountain fresh" or "rain forest" or "spring meadow" these products are all made from something mother nature never heard of. use baking soda and open the window!
