An emulator is a program that is designed to simulate a piece of hardware on your computer. Emulators are most commonly created to simulate old computer systems (like Apple IIe, Commador 64, ect.), old game systems (NES, SNES, Atari 2600, ect.) & even old arcade machines.

Emulators require ROMs, or the digital equivalence of the machine's software, to run... which, unfortunately, where you tread into the nasty legal territory of copyright laws (which states that all corporation retains all rights to an item for 95 years after it's been created OR an individual retains all rights to their item for 75 years or until death). This means that PONG (the first arcade game released) still has around 65 years left on it's copyright.

Please be aware that while the Emulator is legal (as it has the same legal rights as a VCR, DVD-Recorder & CD/DVD-burner), the ROMs it uses ARE ILLEGAL due to copyright law. The only way around this is if you create the ROM files you're using yourself (as permitted under the "Fair Use" policy), NOT by downloading a copy of the ROM files from a site (as you're downloading somebody else's copy).

It is in good legal taste that I do not give any links to either emulators NOR ROM sites to avoid encouraging you to violate the law... but you can find this out on your own time.

An emulator is a software program, that "emulates" hardware console devices. For example, Snes9x is a Super Nintendo emulator. It's a program that handles all the responsibilities the actual, physical box would handle.
