Is it much easier for computer hackers to get inside your computer and to send you viruses while you are talking to somebody in the chat room or on the Yahoo, Windows or MSN Messanger?

Well if your running these types of programs, then obviously have ports open to run these programs, so I guess it could make it easier for the cracker (this is the correct word for somewhat that practices going around getting unauthorized access to system), if they were to find the ports open, and then look for an exploit or something.

Yes, but then so is being connected to the internet at all. if you want complete security you would never connect to the internet. how boring would that be. so long as you are responsible when using chatrooms ie don't accept files from anonymous people no matter how nice they seem. In order to work they also need to open ports and when a port is open it gives hackers a point of entry that it is why a properly configured firewall is essential. it will regulate what programs can use that port thereby lessening the risks of being hacked.
