Does Ad-Aware SE provide the same protection as Norton? I have both now, but Norton wants me to upgrade and says I will lose protection if I don't renew, but I was thinking if I had Ad-Aware, it would cover viruses. Is this true? Thanks.

Ad-Aware is spyware. You can get a free virus protection from Grisoft AVG. If you do, make sure you get the lastest version of it which is 7.5.

AdAware SE is not an Anti-Virus program. It is an Anti-Spyware/adware program. The free version is only an "on demand" program. You must pay to get the full time protection.

If you do not want to renew the Norton then I recommend you get the free Virus Shield from AOL. No membership or email program is needed. This program uses the Kaspersky AV program which constantly passes detection and removal test at 99+%. The tests of AVG only rated 82% detection and removal.

For Anti-Spyware protection I recommend Windows Defender, Spybot Search and Destroy (recently updated with a new scan engine and Tea Timer fix), SpywareBlaster(does not scan and remove. Monitors and block malware before it can install). These three will give very good basic protection.

If you choose to use Spybot, during the download watch for a window that lists the "Tea Timer" option. Approving Tea Timer will allow Spybot to provide full time protection. Without TT it is only an on demand scanner.

All three of these programs can be downloaded a this safe download site:

I have the Ad Aware SE pro and Norton Anti virus and they work nicely together...I like having Norton because they always update. Makes me feel safer. I'm not sure about Ad Aware catching a virus...I've had Ad Aware for a while now and Norton always catches the viruses for me.

I use both Norton Personal Firewall and Ad-Aware SE with the various patches and add-ons that you can get for Ad-Aware but in addition to both of these, I've added the free antivirus program called AVG Free Edition from Grisoft. Not only does it work perfectly with these other two programs, its entirely free and is comparable to some of the leading antivirus software on the market. It also supports a right click option where you can scan single files or folders with a few mouse clicks. I am constantly fixing and working on peoples computers and as a rule of thumb I ALWAYS include these products as necessary additions to the system. Here is the link for AVG Free Edition:

Ad-Aware only protect you from spyware and adware but not from virus. You'll need a separate app to protect you from virus. Here's a free one that works great:

Uninstall Norton before installing anything else.

The single best anti-virus program I know of is Bitdefender. Norton slowed down my PC.
