1. The answer appears to be based on differences as to when God created the world. QUOTE: "This discrepancy results from differences between the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Churchas to the date of the creation of the world."

2. For the Roman Catholic Church this was in 4004BC. James Ussher (1581-1656), the Archbishop of Ireland, calculated that the first day of the Creation was October 23rd of that year.

3. However the Ethiopian Orthodox Church believes in the following dates:
(a) the creation was in 5493BC (year 0);
(b) Jesus was born 5500 years later, thus in 7AD (year 5500);
(c) so the present millennium ends in 2007AD (year 7500).
QUOTE: "According to the beliefs of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, God created the world 5500 years before the birth of Christ. It is 1997 years since Jesus was born. Based on this timeline, we are in the year 7497 of the eighth millennium . These are referred to as Amete Alem in Amharic or 'the years of the world'. Era of the world dates from 5493 Ethiopian B.C." [Note that this webpage information is now 2 years old, and we are now in year 7499]

4. As to which calendar is right, that is for you to decide. Personally, I do not accept the Biblical account of the Creation, preferring instead to believe that the solar system is 4.55 billion years old. But that opens up a whole load of other huge, complex issues well beyond the range of your (relatively) straightforward question.

5. I hope this was helpful.
