The reductionist approach in biology is where you learn about an organism or some biological question by isolating different pieces of the puzzle so you can figure out each piece works and where it fits. Like looking at the functions of different types of liver cells to learn how the liver works. Reductionists look at larger pictures by putting small pieces together. The advantage of this approach is that small pieces are less complex than larger pieces, there are usually fewer variables to consider, and the likelihood of actually figuring something out is relatively high.
