North bridge chip. Also known as the memory controller hub. It handles communication between the RAM, CPU, AGP (or PCI express) and south bridge.

It is what dictates the type, number and speed of processors and RAM.

i believe you're speaking about the heatsink for the processor. it truly is continually made from aluminum and is made to take warmth from the processor, that's lower than it. the reason of the posts are to provide extra section for warmth to bypass from the heatsink to the air than only a flat floor.

It sounds like you are talking about the south-bridge(north-bridge controls memory and will be covered with a heat sink) of the motherboard. That usually is the chip that controls what is being used in the computer, like say the graphics card, PCI card, drives, etc..

That IS the CPU (which is the same thing as the processor, hence Central Processing Unit). The device that this CPU is plugged into is called a motherboard.

it is the chipset as suggested above. the processor will be much bigger than this when viewed from a built pc as the cooling fan will cover up its rather small size and make it look quite big.

If it is a black retangle that is short then it is your intel graphics chipset. If it is just a box with possible a fan on it, then it is your intel processor.

Take a picture of it and post a link to it.

UPDATED RESPONSE:

To the dipshits that keep posting that it's the CPU, go back and read the question again, specifically this part:
"...it is NEAR THE CPU".

It depends on the type of processor. It probably is the main processor, but if there is a bigger one or different one nearby, that one you see might be a numeric processor if it is an older PC. Either that or the processor had a baby.

Maybe it's one of the "chipset" Integrated Circuits. Search "chipset" on google or yahoo and read about them and their function on the PC motherboard.
