First, know if you need to round to one digit, two digits etc.

So, 6.432 could be rounded to 6.4 or maybe 6.43...so know how many digits you'll need.

THEN: Remember these rules for rounding numbers:

1) If the number *after* the last number you need is less than 5 just get rid of the last number. So, if you need two digits, then 6.432 would become 6.43 since "2" is less than 5.

2) If the number is more than 5, add "1" to your last number. If you had 7.479, and needed to round to two decimal places, then this would become the 7.48 since "9" is more than 5.

3) If the number is equal to 5, then go to the nearest even number. For instance, 3.335 would be 3.34 whereas 9.475 would be 9.48.

Okay...so, now you have those rules, how would I round scientific notation?

Let's say you have:

3.4564 x 10^5

And it says, round to two decimal places.

Follow the rules above. You need two decimal places, so you know it will be 3.45...you look at the number after, it's a 6. 6 is greater than 5, so you know it will become 3.46.

So the answer is:

3.46 x 10^5

Let's try another one:

Convert .0004285 to scientific notation, and round to two decimal places.

You can convert to scientific notation:

4.285 x 10^-4, and then start rounding.

You know you need two decimal places: 4.28. The next number is a "5", and so you'll round to the nearest even number. It's already there...it's an 8, so it will just stay, 4.28.

Answer: 4.28 x 10^-4

I hope that helps and good luck.
