Jefferson Davis was the first and only president of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. He was also an officer in the U.S. army during the Mexican-American war of 1846-48 and was one of the heroes of the battle of Buena vista, which led him to be a Senator from the state of Mississippi in the United States Senate before being elected the President of the Confederacy. Jefferson Davis was a very capable leader and did what he could with what he had, but some of his decisions certainly shortened the war, specifically the second invasion of the north (gettysburg), and his replacing Joe Johnston with John B Hood.
