Start a gratitude journal. Everyday, write down five things that you are grateful for - maybe it's your health, that you got the last seat on the bus, your best friend - that your sandwish shop made peanut butter cookies today (and those are your favorite!).

By bringing attention to all the good things you have in your life, you'll gradually become happier.

Check out the poem Desiderata too - here is a snippet:
"If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time."

You can't "learn" to be happy. It's something you work on. You could try some therapy if you feel really down. You may be suffering from depression. Being happy is not learned. You could try changing your attitude too. Do things that you enjoy.

Happiness is not a learned attitude. Happiness is an attitude of choice. It comes from within and without. Deep Spiritual roots in a truthful faith is a good start. Practice positive thoughts and deeds to those about you. Understand that the world is not about you; it's about our relationship with God. It is our daily walk with God, either we have peace (close to God) or turmoil (separation from God).

So, don't put any effort into acquiring happiness. Put effort into growing closer to God, and loving & appreciating what He has done out of love for you. Look outside your "me-world" and explore the world about you, it's people, the diversity and beauty that is all about us. Put forth your hand and heart in friendship and love toward your fellow man, and you won't feel so alone anymore. Peace to you!

Is it a "learning" thing?

Sometimes you are happy because everything is just right. Usually when you aren't happy it's because things aren't the way you would like them. Seems like you have to either 1. decide what you want to happen then take action or 2. just say to yourself, "this is as good as it gets so I might as well just be happy".

Happiness is a state of mind. Either you are are are not. If your not happy ask yourself, why? Then take steps to be happy. For instance: I'm unhappy because I have no money, I must go get a job... I'm unhappy because I don't have a girlfriend, I must go met girls to get a girlfriend. I'm not happy because I am not good at the guitar, I must practice to become good...

Well, if your unhappy, try changing various aspects of yourself or your environment. Experiment with different routines, try meeting different people, break out of your status quo.

You might also keep a diary, noting what you did each day, and try to describe your emotions at the time. You might also consider therapy, there is nothing wrong with looking to improve yourself and this is one posibility.

The nature of the question you asked leads me to believe that you know it is up to you and nobody else. Happiness comes from within, and is based on the choices you make and the life you lead.

Good luck.

Sometimes, letting go seems like the easiest thing to do. But think about this: you've invested so much of your time and energy into another person; you've made a solemn promise; and you still know there's love, even if it's hiding underneath the surface. I believe you first got to truly want to be happy. You should look deep inside yourself and find out why you are not happy. Once you determine the cause of your unhappiness you can then move forward to changing that. Start by loving yourself and then go from there.

we as humans are very selfish we get into self pity moods and it is hard to come out. but look at your self in the mirror everyday and tell your self you are going to be happy and no one can change that but you... smile more laugh like you crazy and say happy things to people you don't even know, like good day, have a great day there is only kinds of days a good day and a better day.. things will change... Good Luck.
