A rat is a "Rattus Norvegicus", whereas mouse is a "Mus Musculus"

i.e. 2 VERY completely different species and genders of rodents!!!

Except that in Spanish, a rat is a "rata" whereas a mouse is a "raton"... Pretty consfusing, eh?!

mouse and rat are common names, both are polyphyletic groups. Yes different species. Even within the "Rats" and "Mice" there is alot of difference. To group them together would be like saying gorillas and humans are the same. Related, yes, same, no.

Rats-
Genus Neotoma, Rattus, Echymieds, Heterocephalus, etc...

Mice-
genus Mus, Peromyscus, Chaetodious, etc.

Yes , they are different species, which have different types.e.g....brown rat...rattus norvegicus, house mouse...mus musculus.they have different genes and would be unable to mate together. They only have a superficial likeness , like rabbits and hares.
