If it's a right triangle, and ONLY if a right triangle, use the Pythagorean theorem....

4^2 + 12^2 = hyp^2

16+144=hyp^2

160=hyp^2

so the hypotenuse is equal to the square root of 160.

The sum of the squares on the two legs are equal to the square on the hypotenuse. 4 squared is 16; 12 squared is 144. The sum is 160. The hypotenuse is the square root of 160. 12.65.

Using the Pythagorean theorem, a^2 + b^2 = c^2, it is the square root of 4^2 + 12^2, so the square root of 16+144, so the square root of 160, which is 12.65.

Use the pythagorean theorem.

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

In your case that is:

4^2 + 12^2 = 16 + 144 = 160 = c^2
c = √160 = √(16*10) = 4√10

4 squared plus 12 squared
16+144=160
Then you find the square root of 160
12.65 is the hypotenuse.

in a right triangle, use pythagorean's thorem.
a^2 + b^2 = c^2
a and b are two sides and c is the hypotenuse.
it doesn't matter which one is a and which one is b.
4^2 + 12^2 = 16 + 144 = 160. the square root of 160 is your answer (4[10)
(the [ is the keyboard's best imitation of a sqaure root sign)
hope that helped

Use the Pythagorean theorem(a^2+b^2=c^2)
4^2+12^2=160.
Take the square root of 160 and that will give you the Hypotenuse.
Hope this helps.
Oh! remember this theorem, it may come in handy on later math assignments.

4*4 + 12*12

and then take the square root

=16 + 144 =

Square root(160) = ~12.649

do 4 squared times 12 squared. then find the sq. root of that answer.

4 squared is 16
12 squared is 144
then do 16*144
and find s. root
