Series of Unfortunate Events? Artemis Fowl? Maybe too young for him?
There's a series called "The Golden Compass" he might like, by Phillip Pullman, or "Over Sea, Under Stone," by Susan Cooper.

A 15 year old wouldn't want to read Dr. Seus so here are some fantasy novels he might aprove:
ERAGON: MOVIE TIE-IN by Christopher Paolini
This deluxe edition of ERAGON includes an excerpt from ELDEST, the second volume in the Inheritance trilogy; an exclusive foldout map of Alagaësia; never-before-seen art by the author depicting Zar'roc, Eragon's sword; and an expanded pronunciation guide to the Ancient and Dwarf languages.
Midnight for charlie bone by jenny nimmo
The fabulous powers of the Red King were passed down through his descendants, after turning up quite unexpectedly, in someone who had no idea where they came from. This is what happened to Charlie Bone, and to some of the children he met behind the grim, gray walls of Bloor's Academy.

My 14 year old reads on a college level, and he likes Stephen King, Peter Benchley, and the Magic the Gathering series. Kind of hard to censor a child of that age, try asking him what he likes to read. You can always try the classics though like Moby Dick or any thing by Dickens.

There's a new medieval fantasy series in hardcover that you might like. The title of the first episode is THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY. It's 445 pages of action, adventure, magic, mystery and mayhem. If you're a fan of Conan, LOTR or Eragon, this is one you'll enjoy. A Hollywood producer said it was, "Like Braveheart meets Lord of the Rings." (See other comments & reviews below.)
Good luck, whatever you decide to read!
Major Media Reviews:
Publishers Weekly said in a rare STARRED Review:
"A fast pace, sly humor, amusing dialogue and a richly researched background lift Baxley's fantasy, the first of a new series set in medieval Britain. When Merlin's long-ago apprentice Kruzurk Makshare (aka the Boozer) receives a dreamlike visitation from the legendary mage, he learns he must destroy another former apprentice, the villainous Seed of Cerberus. To do so will require a visit to the demon-guarded Blackgloom Keep. Enter young Daynin McKinnon, who discovers a curious rune-covered headstone, which may be the fabled Blackgloom Bounty, and brings it to Kruz's attention. Kruz believes it will provide entry into the fortress, while Daynin hopes the sale of the stone will restore his family's fortunes. The colorful cast of good guys and ne'er-do-wells includes the Pictish ghost of Brude McAlpin liberated from his tomb, assorted pursuing Caledonians and a bemused Prior Bede, whose monastery serves as a hiding place for the Blackgloom Bounty. Suitable for fantasy enthusiasts of all ages."
Library Journal said:

Lord of the Rings was my first choice. Here's another Narnia is good, Star Wars is what my brother likes (he's twelve). Also there are more Tolkien books like the Hobbit and Roverandome (sorry if I misspelled it).
Hope you find a good book for him. ; )

The Redwall series. Or the Castaways of the Flying Dutchman series. They're mostly for middle schollers, but I'm 16, and I still love reading them (but then again, I'm a girl).
