I think it would be best to put your child in a toddler bed when he is a toddler and able to walk. And even then I still would have some type of guard so the little person does not roll and fall out of the bed.
9 months is way too early to take him out of the crib.

I've never heard of a 9 month old being able to crawl out his bed. He should be in a crib still at this age its not safe for him to be in a toddler bed, if you think different then you should at least have a bar up where he cant roll into the floor!

Usually baby doesn't go into a toddler bed until two years. If your child is crib jumping though you could leave your crib open so that if he does jump it's not so much of a fall. Or you could get a toddler bed that is close to the ground. If he is staying in the crib for the most part, I would wait until cloer to two. The last thing you want is a baby learning how to walk teetering around the house while you are sleeping.

Totally agree with those saying 'when he climbs out'. That's the best sign your child can give you that the crib is no longer totally safe for him! It's so true that once he's in a bed, he'll be EVERYWHERE, and putting him down at night will become a battle, especially if he's too young to be reasoned with, or to understand why he needs to stay in bed. You could end up spending hours every evening just returning him to bed, over and over again.
Babies climb out at all different ages, some are happy to stay in their crib til 2 or 3, some are out at 14, 15 months... let him lead the way, and definitely still have a guard rail, just so he doesn't fall out when turning over. He'll have to get used to not having four sides of protection anymore.

We put our son in a toddler bed when he learned to climb out of his crib. That was around 15 or 16 months. But my baby sister was in a crib until she was almost 3. It just goes by personal preference. I personally don't think you should rush it. Once our little man was free of the bars he was all over his room. I had to strip it basically. He would dump his drawers, tear off his wallpaper, fall asleep in the closet. It was a trying time for us. And it only got worse when he learned to open his door. I can't even tell you all those possibilities. The bathroom is right next to his room so he would try to play in there and got into everything. It is hard to 100% kid proof your home when your kid can get everywhere. Sigh...but we got thru it. Good luck!

The best way to tell is right after the first time he crawls up, over, and out of his crib it's time to put him in a toddler bed.
But seriously, 9 months and not walking is a little young yet. I would wait until he is mobile and even then, make sure you have a guard rail up on the side until he gets used to not having the crib rail to stop him from falling off.

I switched my son over to a toddler bed at 14 months, and he has never had any problems with falling out or going to sleep. Go with you childs cues, each one develops at a different rate. I had to switch my son over as he was beginnning to climb out and I was afraid he'd fall and hurt himself. 9 months is probably a wee bit young, try waiting until he can walk.

When the child can walk alone is good. If the baby isn't even cruising, then let him stay in his crib. Introduce him to the bed when he's about a year old.

I wouldn't rush it. Keep him in the crib, unless he's getting out of it. I moved my 1st son to a bed (with rails) at two and my second son to a bed (with rails) at 2 1/2. Good luck!
