Technically speaking, your rising sign -- or ascendant -- reflects the zodiac sign that was ascending on the Eastern horizon at the moment you took your first breath in this world. This is why an exact birth time is so vital to finding your accurate rising sign. Located on the cusp of the first house of your astrological chart -- or at the nine o'clock position -- the rising sign can exert an influence almost as powerful as your Sun and Moon signs.
If you were to think of your Sun sign as your soul -- your inner personality and potential -- and your Moon sign as your heart -- your emotional core -- then you could say that your rising sign is your physical self or the face you present to the world. For example, though your Sun sign might be Taurus, your rising sign could very well be Gemini. While you're feeling laid-back, others will tend to see you as a ball of nervous energy and cerebral wit.

The rising sign is the sign that is coming over the eastern horizon at sunrise. As the earth rotates fully every 24hrs each sign of the zodiac will follow one after another (aries, taurus, gemini etc) approx every 2hrs. As a general rule of thumb if you happen to be born at sunrise your sunsign and rising sign may be the same. The rising sign is an important point in a chart and requires a fairly accurate birth time, astrodienst.com is one of the better astro sites offering charts and intelligent info.

Basically, the easiest way to put it is that your Rising sign or Ascendant is the "mask" that you wear to the outside world. Your sun sign is who you are at your core. Your rising sign is kind of who you put out there when you're with people who don't know you too well. Ever met someone you were SURE was one sign, but turned out to be another? Chances are, you guessed their Ascendant.
I recommend that you go to www.astro.com and type in your information into their birth chart generator. You absolutely NEED to know your time of birth. If it's a few minutes off, it can make a total difference. In my chart, if I had been born 5 minutes later, my Rising would be in the next sign. If you don't know your time of birth, there really is no way to find out :(
Good luck!

Literally, the term "Rising Sign" refers to the star or planet that is closest to the horizon, as viewed from your point of birth, at the exact (or within 15 min) of your birth. This sign is determined by calculating your time and date, in relation to the movements of the planets, which gives an illustration of the "night-sky" or placement of planets and stars when you were born.
One depiction of the Rising Sign is the view one has of themselves in how they relate to others...

The position of the sun in one's horoscope as per the time of birth is well defined. The sun is in the ascendent at sun rise, in the seventh at sunset, in the tenth at noon. Twelve signs are rising in the east one by one as per the positions of the sun in 24 hours.
