some good ideas for short stories are to go wirh what you know. if you only know about physics write about physics. if you only know about teddy bears write about teddy bears. thats all you have to do. what i would do is write about something that has happened to me.

I cannot answer that for you. Our opinions differ and the only thing you can write, is something from your own head. Look around. The world is full of ideas. Turn on the news... go for a walk, have a conversation with your mother. Read writing help books, particularly ones with prompts in them. The only thing I would advise against doing if your looking for ideas though is reading fiction. It will alter your writing, your ideas and style. You will be swayed by someone else's words and ideas.
AND DO NOT write about what you know! Write about what impassions you! It doesn't matter if you get the facts right. Writing isn't about facts. The emotion you pour into your words is what matters.

Look at the genre. Find a way to take a common idea and give it a 180 degree spin. Take for example Cinderella, instead of her being beautiful and pleasant, what if she were ugly and wicked and the stepmother and sisters were nice and had to put up with her.

Write about what you know. My daughter had a fiction story published from an idea she got watching all the diet pill commercials. It was funny and appearently the editor agreed.

Write your story, with different charecters and stuff, you could even have it to where you go into the future or some fantasy world. That would be cool.

Write about the absolute worst memory you have. Even if you really, really suck, the story will be interesting. And if you rock, it will be awesome. Works every time.
