Why are Russians so good at tennis? (in general)

Don't laugh, but people over there say that Tennis became especially popular when Eltsin came to power as it was his favorite sport. We even joked when Putin came to power that "now we'll have to throw out our shorts and tennis T-shirts and get ourselves karate kimonos" ;-);-);-)
But in general, Russians are good not only in Tennis. Look at gymnastics, hockey (yes, not lately, but before), figure skating... But still nobody can argue with it - the most popular sport in Russian was, is and probably will be soccer. We call it football, and it has the same effect as American football has on Americans - whenever there is a big championship, streets turn dead - everyone's watching TV... ;-)
