Male elephant seals have a large nose (or what you might call a trunk). This is used for respiration (obviously) and they "puff it up" when challenging or fighting with other males to make themselves seem larger and more formidable. But the trunk is not like an elephant truck--they can't use it to grasp things or use it to put things in their mouth. Females elephant seals don't even have a trunk.

No they do not have a trunk. The males have an enlarged proboscis. A proboscis is any apendange that sticks out from the head of an animal, but on the male seals, it is not a trunk like an elephant. It does not use it to catch fish nor to feed itself. it is used in mating displays. The females do not have it. This website has a picture.

Elephant seals are probably named "elephant" for two reasons.
1) they and the walrus are they largest in the seal family
2) the adults have large trunk looking noses. They can't pick things up with it like a true elephant. It's actually inflated to amplify the sounds it makes (they are very loud and territorial) and the larger the nose-sack, the more appealing it looks towards females.

An elephant seal actually has a hidden mouth just behind it's right eye, into which it sneakily slips it's peanuts when nobody is looking. They don't actually eat fish, they just catch them and doss them in a hidden pouch until they can get a good price for them down billingsgate market. As for the trunk, it's just a rather large cold sore(they are well known for being prone to them). Hope this helped solve your query.

Shallow water? The seal. something extra the place the Orca can navigate, like something of the sea, the Orca. heavily, why could an Orca flow right into a wading pool to %. a combat with an Elephant seal? it somewhat is such as you crushing an ant by employing sticking your arm into an ant hill.

I found a picture. It's not really a long, thin trunk. It is more of a protrusion. I don't think it is used to catch fish. It's more of a status symbol like a lion's mane. Perhaps they come in handy in fights with other males.
