Yes I do. It sounds crazy but when I want my cat Roy to stop doing something all I have to do is look him in the eye and talk right at him and say "no" and he listens. If we don't make eye contact he doesn't listen to me.

im a strong believer that pets can understand you. how else could a dog, horse or any other vocally trained animal know what to do and when to do it

I think they understand the tone first. I'm sure there are words they come to recognize "good girl" "lay down" and they can attach the meaning over time to the words they hear often.

I surely do, I've had all sorts of animals all my life and I know that they understand some of the things I say, they also understand your tone and emotions

Our dog has been building a vocabulary ever since we got him. He now knows "walk" "outside" "dinner" "rawhide" "ball" and probably more that I'm forgetting.

Funny thing is though, he perks up when he hears these when I'm talking to my wife about other things, so it's not like a simple command/response thing.

Yes, depending on if the pet listens to you.

Some pets just don't like what people say to them.

We are all animals.

i think they understand more than we think but i also think that they understand more through our emotions and body language..
try saying to you dog "im sad and depressed" with a smile on your face! its hard lol so think its not the verbal more the non verbal and tone.
having said that..and this is the gods honest truth...i came home from work one friday and tess my labrador greeted me inthe usual way after afew mins of mad attention i sat down with my girlfriend (as witness) and said i fancied a beer... moments later tess came in with a can of beer from the porch!
decide for yourself but i think she understood me my girlfriend says its caus i do that most nights n say "i need a beer" in the same way n tess associated the actions with the sounds and body language rather than understanding my english.

They don't understand the words, but they understand the intention. Animals are ingrained to read body language and sound tonations.

They do learn certain words. I had a mised breed dog once that knew what the words ride, car, park, an go meant.
