While I agree with most of the answers so far, I have to point out that, in my opinion, the Sims 1 for Gamecube was by far more fun than the Sims 2 for Gamecube. The sims 2 for Gamecube was a waste of my money as it was essentially the Sims 1 all over again with aspirations and an universal Sim-inability to have children.
So, if you're looking for PC Sims, go with the Sims 2. If you're talking about console games, stick with the Sims 1.

Yes, it is. But, you should make sure you have enough space on your computer and that it can handle it. The Sims 2 offers a lot of new choices that the Sims 2 doesn't and you get to watch your sim grow from baby to toddler and up. Also, you have wants and aspirations to fulfill, unlike Sims 1. The expansion packs for Sims 2 are really neat also.

Yes, I own both. I bought sims 2 first and I liked it so much I bought the original and was a little disapointed with it. It's still fun though.

Yeah definitely...Sims 2 is in full 3D, and it includes a lot of content that was only added to Sims 1 in expansion packs. Plus, your characters age, and there is a ton of stuff to do (leveling up, etc).

YES. sims 2 is sooo much better. the graphics are so much better, there are more options when it comes to building houses (and its better organized) and you can make more than 2 floors on your house. the people are better, because you can edit them more fully (totally customize facial features, more clothing options, etc.).
