Of all the commonly used diamond shapes, it's the "Brilliant Round Diamond" that offers the best sparkle. The geometry of this particular cut is deliberately designed for for the most "brilliance", which is a combination of brightness and glitter. Check the link about diamond cuts:

The sparkle of a diamond is from the reflection of light off all the various angles cut into the diamond. What we call sparkle is the light returned to us as we look at the stone. An ideally cut diamond will have infinitely more sparkle then a good or poorly cut one, no matter what color or clarity it may be (with the exception, perhaps, of a really included I1or2).

The sparkle comes from any surface that the light can reflect off of it regardless of the cut.
