Well it would depend greatly on how we made contact as to how people would react. Contact could be anything from receiving radio signals to friendly aliens who speak our language landing and offering us help to an attack intended to kill us all. Naturally, people would react differently to each of those situations, with the first one being the least disruptive and the last being the most disruptive.

The world's organized religions would do one or more of the following:

1. Suppress knowledge of the communication amongst their followers.
2. Debunk the claims of communication.
3. Convince their followers that the aliens do exist but do not have souls and/or are agents of Satan.

Remember, we are supposed to be the Crown of Creation. The existence of intelligent aliens would contradict this creed and render most of the world's religions invalid.

For this reason, a general understanding of the communication would come slowly , and possibly never in certain parts of the world where religion and government are one and the same. Some cultures might claim that the culture reporting the communication is trying to undermine their beliefs. Wars will almost certainly be fought, since any excuse to fight a war over religious issues is considered justified.

I don't think they (would/have--your choice) let us know they were here. Whether they are/were living among us or just visiting, i think they'd probably view Homo sapiens--as a race, worldwide--as infants. I suspect (hope) they'd wait until we grew up a little before deciding to say hello.

We're such an incredibly young species, after all, and still in our "kill them before they kill us" period; why would they want to make our acquaintance at this point?

I believe that any space-faring civilization would be much more technical then we are currently. They could do a lot more then us with, well, every kinda science we have and what we don't know about yet, too.

Wormhole travel? Check.
Blackhole travel? Check.
Gated travel of the kind that only appears in our science fiction? Check.

We've been evolving as thinking beings for a couple million years. Think what we'll be like in a couple billion years, what we'll be capable of. Do you really think space is so empty that it doesn't contain 2 billion year old civilizations that have the curiosity and technology that enables them to go and see who else is out there? Do think us THAT unique and special that no one else in the vastness of space has evolved intelligently?

Get real.

We're special--we're just not that unique.

Life happens, dude, here, there, and everywhere. And any intelligent life that evolves into traveling the stars has to know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away and know when to run.

They'd be crazy not to run from us, here on our beautiful blue-and-green planet, while we're at the stage of lobbing nuclear missiles around, you know?

They'll get back to us later, after we grow up a bit.

I don't think life is unique to this planet alone and who knows if we haven't been visited already.

Since we're so busy killing each other over religion, land and Nike tennis shoes there's probably some stellar road map that reads:
"Earth: don't even stop there for gas"

If we made contact with aliens they would probably all look like oprah. Do I think it would be chaotic where people would carry guns? Don't all people already carry guns?
