Weight should not be the reason to start solid foods. Typically the rule of thumb is for breastfed babies 6 months, while formula fed is 4 months. 4 months for formula is because the formula does not grow with the baby and the baby then needs to start supplementing with real food for all his proper food/ nutrient consumption. For breastfed babies, they don't even NEED to start solids until you think they are ready, roughly between 6-9 months. This being because the breastmilk DOES grow with baby and therefore doesn't need to be on a good solid diet till age 1ish when they no longer use breastmilk as a food source but for comforting mainly. If you were to start him on solids, you'd find he'll prefer the boob 10 to 1!! Please don't start the baby just yet, if nothing else wait till he turn 6 months and then start! Also, if he is satisfied there is no need to change it up! Big breastfed babies are the best and are completely healthy because of the breastmilk!!

I didn't follow that rule at all and my daughter was not a big baby by no means. I started her on solids when she was 3 1/2 months old because she showed the signs of being interested in my food. She was only about 11lbs at the time and took to her jar food like tape on a present. I have no regrets as she is healthy and growing and now she is starting stage 2 foods. Seeing as though your baby is soo big I think you should start (even cereal) he may seem satisfied but he is developmentally ready. Good luck

Do you want to delay starting solids because you think he's too big, and you're worried he'll just keep gaining?
Don't be... follow your baby's cues... you'll know when they're ready to explore food. Wait until 6 months... and introduce everything slowly.
My daugther is 7 months old now, and still isn't really interested in food... she's happy with her bottle... but to set a routine I still sit her down for meals (even if all she eats is a couple of spoonfuls)

My daughter is four months and is 17 lbs. I had her four month check up two weeks ago now and the doctor said that she is still gaining weight consistently so wait until six months.( I am going to wait until closer to six months because my husband and I have allergies. ) As long as your son is content and is still getting bigger sticking with breast milk is fine. A friend just started their six month old on solids and he is 20 lbs. He's doing great! As long as your baby is content and gaining weight there is no rush to introduce solids.

My baby is now almost 10weeks old and his doctor put him on cereal and applesauce when we went for our 2 month check up. He said that putting him on the cereal would decrease his appetite some and he would not be hungry as often. So far he is right he does not wake me up every two hours at night wanting a bottle now. But we only give him cereal in the morning and at night before we go to bed. He is twelve pounds right now and like I said almost 10weeks old. Also his doctor said he will put him on vegetables when we go back at 4 months.
Babies that are breastfed tend to grow faster and gain more weight than babies who are bottlefed with formula. The breast milk has more solid nutrients in it and fatty substances that the babies body absorbs more. I am sure that your baby would lose some weight when he starts to walk. I would go ahead and start him on some cereal. I think you will find he will not eat as much and the weight gain will not be as fast.

That's why he is a big boy if you start him on solid foods he won't eat so often, because he will stay full! Since he is 4.5 months start him on some single grain rice cereal bottles at night, then in a month start him on actual cereal.. Good Luck!

I don't know anyone that waited til 6 months. My son is 4 months and I had to start him on food cause he didn't stay full off of just formula. He liked peaches best. They say that when your baby is ready you'll know.

I started feeding my son rice cereal, juice, and jar food WITH PERMISSION from the dr. @ 4 months old...he was 17lb 11oz @ his 4 month visit...he's 5 1/2 mo now and 19lbs+. Hes i the 90th percentile for height and weight. I also breastfeed.
Be sure to only give rice cereal from the SPOON....1/4 cup at the most...very soupy...add water, breastmilk, or juice...i prefer juice and so does baby.
He was 5lb 6oz when he was born..then droped to 5lb 2oz before we brought him home and have been gaining and GAINING ever since.

With my first son i all started whilst he replaced right into a pair of 12 months previous (I had oversupply of breastmilk) although, we found out he replaced into anemic because of the fact he did no longer get adequate iron. He replaced into 28 lb whilst he became a million. Then as quickly as all of us started him on solids he all started dropping weight (he under no circumstances had interest in stable ingredients yet we pushed him because of the fact it replaced into time). he's now just about 3 years previous and nevertheless weighs 28 lb (he lost some weight then gained it back). He replaced right into a terrible eater so i needed I presented him on solids in the previous so he might've have been given used to it greater. All he needed replaced into breastmilk and that i positioned a cut back so he might eat greater solids. With our daughter nevertheless all of us started solids at 5 months whilst she began to flow slowly. She had a good urge for foodstuff from the beginning up (she replaced into born on time and not a preemie like my son replaced into plus i did no longer have epidural along with her). i think of whilst i all started her on solids she replaced into approx 15 lb. Solids are in simple terms fillers, so my daughter isn't gaining weight nicely now (she is a foul eater now like my son). She prefers solids over breastmilk and beverages breastmilk purely at evening. Now at 9 months she eats maximum table ingredients and hates toddler foodstuff. i think of if a toddler is eating the max volume of formula which pediatricians propose, you would be able to desire to grant toddler water. i'm not sure in the experience that your toddler can swallow ingredients in simple terms yet. i attempted introducing ingredients at 4.5 months yet my daughter saved pushing the foodstuff out along with her tongue and could no longer swallow it. Then i attempted back at 5 months and she or he replaced into waiting. Plus she incredibly confirmed interest in solids so I went ideal forward yet i all started slowly I fed her some spoons of rice cereal an afternoon for a pair of month. yet communicate on your pediatrician what's sweet for you. My relatives physician did no longer incredibly care. He did no longer have plenty experience with babies.
