Do what you like best.
If music is your passion, go with it.
In the cruelty of high school social life, varsity football will certainly be more popular. However, who you are and what you really want are all a part of CHARACTER.
Choose what you want because it is what you want, not because one is more popular or people think you should.
Make up your own mind.

Compete for the football team. You can play a musical instrument until you're on your deathbed. High School football only comes around once in your life. Utilize this opportunity while your body is still young. The memories from your football team will be much richer when you look back on them years later. Also, you'll get laid more.

at least you aren't being forced to decide between the two 100%, though you do have to choose which one is going to take a backseat right now.
it sounds to me like you should talk things over with your coach & music teacher. your teacher's offering you a guarantee, your coach is offering you a possibility. see what your coach thinks your chances are. tell him you understand that he can't make promises at this point, but let him know your situation, and if he wants you to choose football over music, then he's going to have to tell you that he REALLY thinks you've got what it takes.
Maybe there's even something that can be worked out so you can do both? Can't hurt to try, really.
As someone else said, this is a personal decision, you have to stick with whichever one is your true passion. Try to put it in perspecitve by asking yourself--
"which of these will I use after high school (in college?)"
if the answer is both (or you hope the answer will be both), then ask yourself--
"which of these will I use after college?"
the answer is likely to be neither or music (no offense, but not many people make it to pro ball, so i'm trying to be realistic here). If that's the case, then you'll have to figure out whether you'd rather commit yourself to music because you'll use it more, or if you'd rather commit yourself to football because you only have it for a few more years before you have to "grow up" and move on to other things.
I know, I'm just giving you lots to think about, without telling you what to do, but this really is a decision you have to make for yourself, and it's one you want to think through, so you don't wind up regretting your decision later!
Good luck, and congratulations on both opportunities, I bet you'll be great at whatever you do!

What do you like better? Take the class you think is better for you. If you think you'll do better in football, then take football. If you think you'll do better in orchestra, then take orchestra. I would personally play football if I was starting.

You will get more chicks if you play football. Unless you're gay, but then you'll be in the shower with a bunch of naked guy's. Win Win, play football.
