Union Gen. Hooker provided "entertaining ladies" for his troops - in fact, that's where the term "Hooker" comes from. Some played the newly invented game of baseball. Playing music & singing was a favorite past time. And, they did a lot of what everyone else did back in the days before TV & radio - they read books, wrote letters, kept journals, drew pictures, etc.
