I am doing a project for school about the difference in Canadian child rearing practices and those in Japan. I am having a lot of trouble finding information on the internet and i was wondering if anyone knows where i could find some good information. I am looking for anything about cultural heritage, customs, family life, the family unit and roles of each member, and things that have changed and things that have remained the same in regards to parenting in Japan. If anyone could help me out i would really appreciate it! Thanks!

The website www.about.com has a lot of stuff. One is links to people in other countries that are looking for pen pals. I'm sure you'd be able to interview some people that way and get some great info. Probably better than anything you'd find in a book, at any rate.

I'm not going to go in too deep with this one, there is so much to say.
Um, generally? from the time they are very young children, they are raised to be the best and the smartest. What kindergarten you are put into determines what Primary School you can get into, High School, University etc. It determines your entire life and Job. So there is a lot of pressure on education on Japanese schools. The hours are long, and even when the bell goes for everyone to go home, almost everyone stays at school for after school activities, sports, study, detention etc.
This is all pretty generalized, but I lived there for a few years and its all true.
After normal school, and then after school activities, they go to juku, which is cram school, which some of them don't get out to midnight. Its crazy hectic and causes a lot of stress in Japanese society.

Your best idea would be an internet friend from Japan who has children. There should be a site where you can find internet "pen pals" for various subjest and interests. There are lots of Japanese families willing to share with you. They are great people. Good luck.
