If I read a technical book, I usually forget 80-90% of what I read.
How can I retain 80-90% of what I read???

Along with what "Terry" said, try reading it just before you go to bed. Without a lot of distractions after you read the info, you tend to retain it better.

Read the bits that are important and write short notes. If it is for a test the make notes and carry them around with you. Look at the notes and then put them away and see if you can memorise. That is what my daughter does for spelling tests.
