Q: Does cigarette smoke get through to the unborn baby?
A: Yes, when the mother smokes, so does the baby. Smokers take in poisons such as nicotine and carbon monoxide (the same gas that comes out of a car's exhaust pipe). These poisons get into the placenta, which is the tissue that connects the mother and the baby before it is born. These poisons keep the unborn baby from getting the food and oxygen needed to grow.
Q: How about cutting down on cigarettes rather than quitting for good?
A: The only way to really protect your unborn baby is to quit. Cutting down is better than doing nothing but it may not make things much better for the baby.
Q: Does quitting smoking provide benefits for the woman as well as for her baby?
A: Pregnancy is a great time for a woman to quit. No matter how long she has been smoking, her body benefits from quitting. She will feel better and have more energy to go through the pregnancy and to care for her new baby.
Of course, she will also avoid many of the future health risks of smoking such as heart disease, cancer and other lung problems. AND she will save money that she can spend on herself and her new baby.

If you continue to smoke during pregnancy your baby will suffer and you will feel very guilty for medical problems that the baby will suffer while growing. Parents that smoke often have children with many ear problems, develope allergies to smoke for the rest of their lives, and other health issues. Tell your doctor that you are smoking and that you want help to quit so your baby will be more healthy and have a good weight at birth. The additivites in cigs. are causing a lot of damage to the unborn child.

It can cause premature labor/birth, low birth weight, and a host of defects and abnormalities. Your baby is more likely to have chronic lung problems - asthma, bronchitis, etc - especially if you smoke around your children after they are born as well.
My neighbor smoked through all three of her pregnancies. Her kids were all born early (with the 3rd they struggled to keep him from coming at about 24 wks), they were all a little small (and still are), and her middle one has medical problems. She is 18 months or more and I have yet to hear her even attempt to speak, and she had really bad seizures when she was a very small baby. Not to say that all of those problems were caused by her smoking, but it's very likely. The best thing you can do for your baby and yourself is quit now. It's not just about you, it's about your child now. Talk to your doctor for options and help on quitting. Please do what's best for your child, I know it's not easy but you really need to quit!

You are an adult with free-will. If the rest of us pregnant women can stop drinking for nine months, you can stop smoking.
Don't cop out on this; the greatest gift you can give your baby is a healthy pregnancy and childhood.

Your baby will come out coughing and hacking up brown crap, atleast that is what helped me to stay a non smoker.
Poor little baby in your body gasping for oxygen and hacking up brown phlem into its amniotic fluid only to have to ingest it again.
