hmmm...Are you leaving them in the washer too long? They tend to get a moldy/musty smell if you do, which may "disappear" out of the dryer but come right back after getting them wet again. If not, Try running an empty load through your washing machine with some bleach to clean out some dirty smells that may be lurking. I don't want to sound mean, but maybe your towel closet? being locked up does nothing good for fabrics! Maybe try some baking soda in the towel closet to erase some of the smell you don't know is there until it's wet...or some dryer sheets folded in between your towel. Hope this helps!!

i don't know about the type of machine you're using but i can tell you that you most likely have a lot of soap and fabric softener built up in your towels...and clothes for that matter. your washer only fills twice, once for wash and once for rinse. if you follow the directions on the bottles of detergent and softener, then you're overusing it by A LOT! they tell you to use a full cup or capfull so they can get you to buy more, when you only need a small amount to adequately wash your towels and clothes.

most people don't know their stuff is built up because of the perfumes in detergents and softeners. trust me, those perfumes and your own-or man's cologne-DO NOT go well together. severe build up can be smelled when towels are wet especially.

what you need to do is wash your towels (and clothes-separately of course) making sure you don't overfill the washer, so that the water can do its job well. as the washer fills put in either one cup (8 ounces) of white vinegar or a whole box (small one) of baking soda. DO NOT USE ANY SOAP. look at the water as the washer is running and see how much yuck is in the water. bleck! do this a few times to really get clean stuff. i do the vinegar/baking soda thing about once a month.

next, when you go back to using detergents and softeners...DO NOT USE PERFUMED BRANDS! trust me on this one. all the soap you need you can get by turning the bottle over so the liquid fills the cap...then back upright again. use the running water from the wash to rinse out the cap and that is all you ever need. if you use powdered soap, you'll only need about a teaspoon of it.

for liquid fabric softener, you'll need to experiment a bit mixing it with water so its effective but not more than needed. for dryer sheets, use only 1.

my mom taught me this stuff and our clothing and towels last a lot longer than you'd imagine. too much soap and softener built up along with overloading the washer and dryer will wear out the fibers of your fabrics.

kinda lengthy but i hope this helps!
