The Oregon Trail was hard to travel on for the adults, but for many of the children they didn't see it as anything but a long vacation.

For those who moved to Oregon/California and Washington it was a fresh start. Many people came because they wanted the land that was given away and many of the most prosperous families in Oregon today are descendents of those hardy pioneers. For some, they really did find gold and struck it rich (but this was few compared to the numbers who traveled the trails). Many came for their health too, as the climate here was so much better than where they were coming from.
