is there a ide lead that can attach 3 devices instead of the normal two,and each device would be set at "cable select"
i want to build a mackine just for burning and 3 x optical drives would be a plus
any ideas?

Even if there was a 3 head cable the bios of your system would have to support it and most don't

Your best option would be to go scsi, or sata.

We have tried using several drives to burn discs on one or two IDE's and it does not like it at all, there isn't enough band width to do it efficiently.

Simple answer is NO.
However if your trying to build a machine for burning, then just get 3 optical drives and an SATA hdd. Best make sure you have a M/B that can take SATA first though. Use one IDE/EIDE cable to connect two of the drives, and the other IDE/EIDE cable for the third drive. Plenty of RAM and a good CPU...

No,

You can have 2 devices per IDE channel. A master and a slave.
Cable select just allows the computer to determine which is the master and which is the slave.

You can purchase an IDE controller card, typically a PCI card to add more IDE channels to your system.

Use SCSI, much better than normal IDE
