Is it just coloration? Many goldfish will develop different colours as they get olders. If the fin still looks normal and the goldfish isn't developing any other symptoms, it should be fine.

However, if the look frayed, red, torns, shrivelled, etc, it may be a bacterial infection. Treat with Maracyn-2. If this is the case, the underlying cause must be addressed. A major cause of fish disease is poor water quality. The small goldfish, fancies, require 20 gallons of water per fish. Larger goldfish like commons, comets, koi, require ponds. They also require clean water (replace 30-50% every week) and proper oxygenation (with an air pump).

As other posters have said, it could be a color change, though in my experience, a color change usually starts on the body and not the fins. It's possible that the black tinging is ammonia burn.

You'll want to get a test kit to test the ammonia levels. If they are high, do a large water change and treat with ammo-lock (if available) to neutralize whatever's left after the water change. From that point, test at least once a day and do water changes if you are getting anything over "2." Hope that isnt the case though as unstable levels can be a "witch"

Has it always been there?

Goldfish come in colors other than gold you know. Black is very common, so is white.

To me it just sounds like coloration since it is also on the fins.

How previous is your fish? If he's youthful he will be accomplishing adulthood and getting his human being shades. If he's previous, he will be replacing colour using age. only as human beings get gray hair or dogs ears and muzzles turn white.
