If someone goes bankrupt a bankruptcy notice will be placed in the local paper. You would need to find out which paper in their local area carried these notices and then contact them to find out if they will do a search for you, if they don't offer that service you can arrange to visit them to search their archive yourself.

Also you may be able to find out by contacting your local county court.

You can do a bankruptcy search at the Land Registry which does not cost that much
