As a person who has lived in SF my whole life, no. There aren't many. It is difficult for anyone to live in SF because of the high rent prices. Gays historically built a community in the Castro, but it's no longer the Gay capital. It is unlikely that SF has a higher percentage of gays than any other large city.

there are more gays in the castro part of sf than in other parts of sf; however, there aren't more gays in sf per capita; they are just more comfortable in public in sf b/c they are not harrassed as they are in the midwest and south. b/t 1in 10 and 1 in 7 people is gay throughout the world, throughout history.
the castro became predominantly gay after WWI. all the soldiers were dropped off in SF after the war. from there, soldiers would travel east back home. the gay soldiers decided they would rather stay together and start a friendly community w/ their mates, than travel home and be criticized, harrassed or killed. after about a decade, the gay soldiers had bought out most of the victorian homes in the castro district. since then, many civil rights movements and aids activism movements have started there. today, businesses throughout sf (even places like spring and usbank) support the gay community by displaying a rainbow flag, which shows support of equality for all people, regardless of sexual orientation, religion, race, ethnicity, etc. sf is proud of the castro and touts it as the 2nd most popular tourist attraction. straights and gays from all over the world visit and are welcome.

word on the street here in San Francisco is that SF is:
70% gay
15% bi
14% straight
1% abstinent
It's so gay here that male rednecks hold hands walking down the street when they're in SF

Mostly Castro, it can be quite a freak show on a Sat. night; I recommend you see it. It's ok, they're harmless.
There is also a Latino area, the Mission, your Chinatown and downtown where the homeless and crazed run rampant. Oh, and all those straight people.
Like they say, it's a nice place to visit....

i don't think there are as many gays there as there once were. they are more tolerant of gays than most large cities, but most gay guys i see there are older, retired, very wealthy looking snobs. most families or younger gay guys can't afford to pay $800 for a tiny room in the worst part of the city there.

Never been to San Fran, but Atlanta is supposed to be the gay Capitol.
And I've been there, it's pretty taken over by them. (One part of downtown, NUMEROUS streets are dedicated to them. Tons of gay bars.)

There are gays like any other city, but only in the predominantly gay Castro district is everyone and their mother gay.
