I like to give family games like Catchphrase, Pictionary, Cranium, Apples to Apples, etc. I am in my 20's and still love to play these games with the entire family. It's something everyone can enjoy.

Depends on how close you are with the family--a nice gift basket would be okay...a donation to a charity in their name would be awesome...a gift certificate to a great restaurant where they can just go and have a nice dinner together would be good too. Maybe a gift certificate to have a family portrait taken, or a great picture frame for them to put a family photo in? For $50, a gift basket is probably your best bet. You could do a 'theme' basket, like if they like to bbq, you could get an apron, a couple of bbq tools, a set of some really fabulous spice rubs and sauces, a cookbook, wetnaps, etc. Or if they like to watch movies as a family do a movie basket with popcorn, several different movies, tickets or coupons to a movie theatre, some movie trivia, etc.

Gift cards are definitely a good idea; movie gift cards and mall gift cards are a good idea if you don't know a lot about them or if their individual interests vary a lot, as they are pretty general and there are a variety of movies to see that interest different people and the mall has a variety of stores. If you know more about them, other gift cards may seem more personal, like one to a restaurant that you know they like.
Gift sets may also be a good idea (those deluxe gift baskets that are usually $20-50 that come with gourmet chocolates and such). Movie tickets may also be a good idea.
Also, you may want to consider getting them collection CD's that feature various artists to pertain to a wider audience. Maybe an '80's music collection would be appropriate, as the parents are in their 50's and the kids in their 20's, as they may be songs that bring back nostalgic memories of older days.
Anyways, good luck!

Donation to a charity in their name (you can present them with a little certificate saying what charity it is... this is especially nice if you know there is a particular cause close to their hearts)
Gift certificate to a nice restaurant
Painting (shop around... you can occasionally find decent stuff for that price, if you frame it yourself)
Money to go towards a particular hobby or enjoyed family event (like if they like DIY stuff, a gift cert to Home Depot or Lowe's)
Gift basket. You can find all kinds of stuff out there now, so just let your mind wander. I'm giving my dad and stepmom (50 yrs. old) a wine and cheese basket.
Sponsor a child (or several) from an Angel Tree in their honor.
Phone cards (seriously... particularly if their adult children live far from home with school or work)
Fruit-of-the-Month club :-)
A game for the four of them to play... We like Cranium, Pictionary, and...... oh, what's the one where you try to bluff your answers and try to get people to believe you?

A personalized basket? Maybe you could get an empty basket from a craft store and fill it with some of their favorite treats--maybe some Godiva chocolates, Ferrero Rochet, some gourmet coffees, jellies, crackers, cheese, some fruit, toss in some gift certificates for food or to their favorite restaurant, maybe some homemade treats like cookies.
Just about everyone I know can always use food!

I would say a gift card to a movie rental store like Hastings or Blockbuster, buy a big bucket for popcorn, put un-used popcorn and the gift card in there with a bow!

The perfect gift for adult children who already have everything is a card reminding them how fortunate they are to already have everything.

Dinner out, movie passes, tickets to a play, wine, framed candid photograph of them you might have, artwork, coffee table book reflecting similar interests or hobby, interesting sculture.
Sum 8514 has a good one: family games always fun, and there are a lot of them out there.
Have fun.
