You can be addicted to any behavior that fills some sort of emotional void, whether it be gambling, shopping, exercising, eating, smoking, etc.

My mother is addicted to shopping for 'bargains'. Everything she buys is on clearance, and she doesn't hesitate to tell people how much she saved on a purchase. As a result, her house is a cluttered mess with her 'finds' and she works two jobs to support her habit. Somehow, the hunt for a good deal makes her feel accomplished and that's what she's addicted to.

Yes. It is just an altered form of an obsessive disorder.

Compared to other things, it is not so ridiculous…people become addicted to almost anything: cleaning, (germaphobia which really is just the fear of germs, but usually coincides/results in the person constantly cleaning to ride themselves of these feared germs), stealing (kleptomania) and yes – even shopping (known as compulsive buying disorder or shop-aholics). Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is really the underlining problem in which this type of anxiety disorder is a potentially disabling illness that traps people in endless cycles of repetitive thoughts and behaviors. People with OCD are plagued by recurring and distressing thoughts, fears or images (obsessions) that they cannot control.

The anxiety (nervousness) produced by these thoughts leads to an urgent need to perform certain rituals or routines (compulsions). The compulsive rituals are performed in an attempt to prevent the obsessive thoughts or make them go away. Although the ritual may make the anxiety go away temporarily, the person must perform the ritual again when the obsessive thoughts return. This OCD cycle can progress to the point of taking up hours of the person's day and significantly interfering with normal activities. People with OCD may be aware that their obsessions and compulsions are senseless or unrealistic, but they cannot stop themselves.

I definitely think that you can be addicted to shopping. I am related to a person who cannot stop and it gets really annoying sometimes. It's just like getting addicted to caffeine or anything like that.
