One major concern is not just the fine and hassle of doing work without a permit.

Your homeowners policy will NOT cover any work done without a permit, that is not inspected to be up to code, if there is ever a problem like fire. Or something else.

I would hate for you to have say and electrical fire and not be able to collect on your insurance because the work was done without a permit and not inspected to be up to code.

It's not worth it.

Get a permit, many places (not all) will allow you to do your own plumbing and electrical ( exscept for connections in the "fuse box") with out a licensed electricain if the work is inspected and approved by the electrical inspector or building inspector.

Trust me on this my father was a building inspector for many years.

Usually building permits are issued by the town or city. They levy the fine. Also, there are severe insurance issues to consider. If you do the work without a permit the town or city will make you tear it all out. Bite the bullet and get a permit.

This is really hard to find.

You may want to consider contacting the NJ Dept. of Consumer Affairs to inquire about the cost of the fine.

Here's the link to contact the dept. below: http://www.state.nj.us/dca/feedback.shtml

Hope this helps!

God Bless.....
